We were hired to design a small residential building featuring open studio apartments with minimal infrastructure. The program includes a ground-floor parking area and four upper floors, dealing with an uphill topography that posed costly construction challenges. After the project was completed, the structure was integrated into the retail store that occupied the two neighboring houses. To achieve this, a translucent roof was installed to connect the new building to the pre-existing complex, while still allowing it to revert back to its originally planned use.
Within the store, the external staircase that previously provided access to the upper floors was converted into a key space resembling a display grandstand, brightly illuminated by a generous skylight. The visual interaction among the floors of the new building, the void of the grandstand, and the levels of the neighboring store gives this space a central and unifying role.
A restricted palette of materials—exposed concrete structure, multiwall polycarbonate enclosures, wood, and Corten steel—defines a neutral yet refined backdrop, capable of accommodating a wide variety of uses.
