The project presented to the contest is based on the consideration of the integral preservation of the historical building, contrarily to the alternatives suggested by the competition brief. To achieve this, the main and bigger space – the orchestra main room – was located under a small square laterally to the building, in a radical and precise construction effort that would assure the possibility of reverting the intervention in the historical building. This location would achieve a better condition considering acoustic insulation, proportions for reverberation and dimensions of the room in comparison to its location in the interior space of the existing building, and would avoid the destruction of a significant part of the eclectic construction.
The theoretical effort concerning preservation and restoration was testified by the honorable mention, that affirmed the qualities of the proposal in spite of subverting the rules while using the underground of a public space.
